How a DPF Works
A Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is a ceramic honeycomb structure mounted in your exhaust system that captures soot particles before they exit the tailpipe. When working correctly, it traps over 99% of particulate matter. The engine periodically burns off accumulated soot through a process called regeneration — either passively (highway driving) or actively (injecting extra fuel).
Common Failure Causes
DPFs fail most often because of: frequent short-trip driving that prevents passive regeneration, failed regeneration cycles that leave ash build-up, contaminated engine oil entering the exhaust, or simply high mileage (typically 500,000–800,000 km on a commercial vehicle).
Replace or Clean?
If your DPF pressure sensor shows excessive backpressure and the filter cannot be regenerated, it is time to act. Cleaning is viable if the substrate is intact and the filter is <70% ash-loaded.
